Garden, February 2014

Gosh, has it really been last July since I last posted?  Yup...it has!  Six months have come and gone.  I'm feeling much better this year.  At least I don't have the chronic bronchitis I had ALL last year, from Labor Day through Memorial Day.  I couldn't do my morning walks.  I just didn't have the energy.  I've been free of my bronchitis now since mid-May last year.  I never got it over the summer.  What I DID change was my eating habits.  I cut way back on carbs (I hardly eat bread any more), bought a VITAMIX blender, and started making healthy green smoothies!  I DID get a concussion while at school (my boys were playing soccer and I somehow ended up in the middle of it, staring up at the sky!) and I was off for 10 days with a moderate concussion, but otherwise, except for a couple days of the flu and some "mental health" days, I've been relatively healthy this year.

As such, I went out this morning and planted a DESERT ZONE DRY wildflower mixture...very drought tolerant.  Good thing, because our drought here in California is very bad.  I figured since everything else was blooming, I should get started on a small wildflower garden.  I found a mixture at Home Depot which contained California poppies, African daisies, zinnias, and I'm not sure what else.  I found some half price Burpee seed packets up at our local hardware store (left over from last year) and I planted them, too.

So, the wildflower garden is DONE and now I just have to wait and see what grows.

In the meantime, I took a walk out in our local city-owned golf course and spotted these brittle brush flowers!  :-)  Not from my garden, but they sure are pretty!

Yellow flowers~cosmos~Sunday Stills Challenge~070713

These cosmos are all in my garden, in the front yard.  I bought a wildflower mixture from American Meadows and sowed the seeds last Spring.  I now have cosmos, zinnias, a little sunflower, and some four-o'clocks.  I'm very happy with this first garden out front and I enjoy watching the birds come to the flowers, especially the hummingbirds.  I'm already planning my fall garden and I will plant new seeds in August.  This is for the Sunday Stills Challenge, "yellow flowers" for July 7, 2013.  To visit Sunday Stills, please go to:  http://sundaystills.wordpress.com/

Not my flowers (I wish...)

No, these aren't in my garden.  Rather, they are in a garden up near Garner Valley, at about 5,000 feet elevation.  Mine get partial shade, and I may have to trim back my mesquite tree to allow them to get more sun.  Aren't they gorgeous?

More garden photos

Just some random shots of my garden as of June 9, 2013.  I love watching all the birds and butterflies that come to visit it! This is in Palm Desert, CA.

Little sunflowers~Today's Flowers~062813

My seeds are coming up now in my wildflower garden and among them are what I call "wild sunflowers".  I don't really know the name of these.  I see them alongside roads in the eastern Sierra Nevada, as well as down here in the desert near Palm Springs, CA.  I've tried to grow them for years, but I finally bought a wildflower mixture and they were in the mix.  I do believe they need full sun (these get afternoon shade).  But, I'm enjoying these, along with the zinnias, cosmos, and other plants that have sprouted.  I'll post more photos of my garden after this one, so if you wish to see it, please look for the other posts!  Today's Flowers for June 28, 2013.  To visit TF, please go to:  http://flowersfromtoday.blogspot.com/
